State subsidy for Energy Storage and Solar Systems

A new grant is opening for energy-intensive companies in Hungary, offering non-refundable support for energy storage investments and optionally renewable-based power generation projects.

The program is ideal for installing energy storage systems alongside existing zero-feed-in solar power plants.

Purpose of the grant

  • Increasing energy independence and improving energy efficiency

  • Reducing business utility costs through sustainable solutions

  • Ensuring flexibility in energy supply

Funding amount: HUF 10 million – HUF 1 billion

Who can apply?

Hungarian micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, as well as large companies

Economic operators with at least one full closed business year

What can be funded?

  • Installation of electricity storage systems
  • Deployment of renewable energy sources (solar systems)
  • Development of grid connections and other related infrastructure investments
  • At least 75% of the stored energy must come from directly connected renewable sources (on an annual basis)
  • The installed energy storage capacity must reach at least 20% of the connected solar power plant’s capacity

Form of financing

  • Advance payment available, up to 25% of the grant amount
  • Post-financing after project completion
  • Payment possible through phased settlement as well

Deadlines

  • Grant announcement: August 2025
  • Implementation period: 24 months

Electricity prices represent a significant cost for companies. Considering current and projected electricity prices, installing industrial energy storage systems, either standalone or alongside existing solar plants — provides an effective solution to these challenges. Store the energy you generate instead of losing surplus unused electricity to the grid.

Use the stored electricity when prices are high and charge the system when prices are favorable. The return on investment for energy storage systems is attractive. If you want to reduce your energy dependence and minimize the negative impact of rising electricity prices on your company’s profit, then an energy storage system is the answer. Applications of Energy Storage Systems

Self-consumption optimization

In the case of zero-feed-in solar systems, when electricity cannot be fed back into the grid, the energy generated but not used is stored in the energy storage units. When needed, this stored energy is utilized, thereby minimizing losses.

Market arbitrage

If a company has an electricity contract indexed to market prices, the energy storage system can be charged when daily electricity prices are low (valley) and discharged when prices are high (peak).

This makes it possible to keep the electricity procurement cost below the baseload price. In this case, an existing solar power plant is not necessarily required. Market prices and fluctuations can be monitored at: hupx.hu

Peak Shaving load curve optimization

Industrial users define their contracted electrical capacity in their electricity agreements.

Exceeding this contracted capacity results in additional costs. With an energy storage system, the extra energy demand during peak periods can be supplied from storage, ensuring that the contracted capacity is not exceeded.

aFRR regulation system

Industrial users are required to connect their solar and energy storage systems to the aFRR balancing market regulation system.

Through aggregators, they can participate in system-level balancing services, for which MAVIR provides compensation to industrial users.
